Free ATS resume checker
By Muhammad Ali, Founder of InstantCV · Last updated: September 9, 2026 · 7 min read
InstantCV scores your resume against applicant tracking systems while you write it. The checker reads your live document, grades formatting, required sections, dates, quantified bullets and keyword coverage, and names the exact fix for each problem — in the browser, with no upload and no account.
What does an ATS resume checker actually check?
A useful checker tests two separate things: whether a machine can read your document at all, and whether the content it extracts matches what employers screen for. Most rejections attributed to "the ATS" are really one of five parsing failures — a multi-column layout, headings a parser does not recognise, dates in an ambiguous format, contact details inside a header or text box, or a PDF that is an image rather than text.
The second half is content. Once a system has parsed your resume, a recruiter filters and ranks on job title, years of experience, skills terms and certifications. A checker that only counts keyword matches misses formatting failures; one that only checks layout misses the reason a readable resume still never surfaces in a search.
| Check | What fails it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Multi-column or sidebar-only content | Parsers read one column top-to-bottom |
| Section headings | Custom labels like "My Journey" | Parsers map standard headings to fields |
| Contact block | Details only inside a graphic header | Missing email or phone drops the record |
| Dates | Inconsistent or missing end dates | Years of experience is computed from dates |
| Bullets | Duty wording with no numbers | Recruiters rank on measurable results |
| Skills coverage | Fewer than 8 relevant terms | Search filters match on skill strings |
| Length | Overlong for the experience shown | Reviewers skim after the first page |
| Export format | Image-based or scanned PDF | An image extracts as zero text |
How do you check your resume with InstantCV?
Open the builder and either type your details in or import an existing resume. The score appears beside the preview and updates as you edit, so each fix is visible immediately rather than after a re-upload.
Check and fix in one pass
- Open the builder and import your current resume (PDF or DOCX) or paste it in.
- Read the score and the list of failed checks underneath it.
- Fix the structural items first: headings, dates, contact block, single-column theme.
- Paste the job posting's key terms into your skills line where they honestly apply.
- Rewrite duty bullets into action-metric-outcome form until the bullet check passes.
- Re-read the score, then export the A4 PDF with selectable text.
Why does the checker run in your browser?
Because a resume contains your name, phone number, address, employers and dates — a complete identity profile. Upload-based checkers copy that into a database, usually in exchange for an account, and some pass it to recruiters as a lead. InstantCV parses and scores your document on your device, so it never leaves it.
There is a practical benefit too: local scoring is instant, so the score can respond to each edit while you type instead of forcing an upload-wait-download loop.
What score should you aim for?
Aim to clear every structural check first; those are pass or fail and a single failure can cost you the application. Once formatting is clean, treat the content checks as a target rather than a hurdle — a resume with strong quantified bullets and eight to twelve keywords drawn from the posting is competitive, and the last few points usually come from tailoring rather than editing.
Do not chase a perfect score by stuffing keywords. Repeating a term, hiding white text or listing skills you cannot discuss reads as dishonest to the human who opens the file, and modern systems do not reward frequency the way old ones were rumoured to.
The five fixes that raise most scores fastest
- Switch to a single-column theme and delete every text box.
- Rename sections to Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications.
- Use one date format everywhere, with an explicit end date or Present.
- Put a number in at least half of your bullets.
- Copy 8-12 exact terms out of the job posting into your skills line and summary.
Can an ATS checker guarantee an interview?
No, and any tool that implies it is overselling. A checker gets your resume read accurately and makes it findable in a recruiter's search; the decision still comes from whether your experience fits the role. Passing the machine step is necessary, not sufficient.
What a checker reliably prevents is the silent failure — a strong candidate whose two-column resume parsed as a single scrambled block, or whose contact details sat inside an image and never made it into the record.
Which resume formats parse most reliably?
A text-based PDF is the safest default and the format most postings request. DOCX is equally readable and is worth keeping for agencies that ask for an editable file. Avoid pages exported as images, resumes built inside slide or design tools, and anything with content in headers, footers or floating boxes.
The InstantCV export is a real text PDF with embedded fonts, so it looks identical everywhere and still extracts cleanly.

Frequently asked questions
How does the ATS checker work?
It reads your live document in the browser and scores layout, section headings, contact details, date consistency, quantified bullets, skills coverage, length and export format, naming the specific fix for each failed check as you type.
Do I have to upload my resume to check it?
No. The check runs on your device, so your name, phone number, employers and dates never leave your browser. You can also import an existing PDF or DOCX and it is parsed locally.
What ATS score should I aim for?
Clear every structural check first — those are pass or fail and one failure can cost you the application. After that, treat content checks as a target: strong quantified bullets and 8-12 keywords from the posting is competitive.
Will keyword stuffing improve my score?
No, and it hurts you with the human reviewer. Modern systems do not reward frequency, and hidden white text or skills you cannot discuss in an interview read as dishonest.
Which file format parses most reliably?
A text-based PDF is the safest default and what most postings ask for; DOCX parses equally well. Avoid image-based exports, design-tool layouts and any content placed in headers, footers or floating text boxes.
Can a checker guarantee an interview?
No. It makes sure your resume is read accurately and is findable in a recruiter's search. The decision still depends on whether your experience fits the role.
