CV format in Pakistan

A CV in Pakistan is a two-page document with a photo, a personal details block, a career objective or profile, work experience in reverse chronological order, education with marks or CGPA, skills, and named referees. Government and multinational employers expect different levels of personal detail.
What is the standard CV format in Pakistan?
The standard is two pages, headed by your name and contact details, with a photograph, a short profile, then experience, education, skills and referees. Pakistani employers read a CV as a complete record rather than the trimmed marketing document a US recruiter expects, so education stays detailed — degree, institution, year and result — even for experienced candidates.
The one convention that has genuinely shifted is the objective. Older Pakistani CV templates open with "To work in a challenging environment...", which says nothing. Multinationals, banks and the larger local employers now expect a profile that states your role, your years of experience and two results.
| Section | Include | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Header | Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn | Use a professional email, not a nickname address |
| Photograph | Usually yes | Plain background, formal dress, head and shoulders |
| Profile | 3-4 lines | Role, years of experience, two quantified results |
| Experience | Reverse chronological | 3-5 bullets per role, numbers where possible |
| Education | Degree, institution, year, CGPA or marks | Include Matric and FSc/A-level if early career |
| Skills | 8-14 terms | Technical tools first, then languages |
| Certifications | If relevant | PEC, ICAP, PMP, Microsoft, ACCA and similar |
| Personal details | Optional | Nationality, marital status only where asked |
| Referees | 2 named referees | Name, designation, organisation, phone |
Should a Pakistani CV include a photo, CNIC and date of birth?
Include a photo — it is still normal and its absence is sometimes read as an omission. Include your CNIC number and date of birth only when the employer's form asks for them, which is common in government, semi-government and armed-forces recruitment and increasingly rare in private-sector and multinational hiring.
Father's name, religion and marital status belong in the same category: fill them in on an official application form if the form has the field, but leave them off a CV you are sending to a bank, a tech company or an international organisation. If you are also applying abroad, keep a second version with all personal details removed, because a UK, US or Canadian employer may be required to discard a CV that carries them.
How do you write experience bullets for Pakistani employers?
Write each bullet as an action, a number and an outcome, and use figures your reader can size. Rupee amounts, headcount, branch or district coverage, monthly volumes and percentage improvements all land better than "responsible for" phrasing, and they are what separates two candidates with identical job titles.
Bullets that work in a local hiring context
- Managed a portfolio of 320 SME accounts worth PKR 1.4 billion, growing deposits 18% in one year.
- Supervised 24 field staff across 6 districts, cutting monthly reporting delays from 9 days to 2.
- Delivered a 3-month ERP rollout for 4 plants, training 140 users with no production downtime.
- Reduced procurement cost per unit by 11% by renegotiating contracts with 12 local suppliers.
- Taught 5 sections of 45 students, raising board pass rates from 78% to 94% in two years.
How should education be listed?
List education in reverse chronological order with degree, institution, city, year and result. Pakistani employers do read CGPA and marks, so include them where they help — a 3.6/4.0 or a first division is worth stating, and a weak result is better left as the degree alone than explained on the page.
Once you have three or more years of work experience, education moves below experience and Matric and Intermediate can be compressed to one line each. Students and fresh graduates keep education at the top, since it is the strongest evidence they have.
Do referees belong on a Pakistani CV?
Yes — two named referees with designation, organisation and phone number is still the local norm, and employers do call them. Ask permission first, choose people who can speak to your actual work, and keep their details current.
This is the opposite of UK and US practice, where naming referees on the document is discouraged and "references available on request" is treated as filler. If you are applying to both markets, keep the referees on the local version and delete the section from the international one.
How do you make a Pakistani CV pass applicant tracking systems?
Use a single-column layout, standard section headings, one consistent date format and a text-based PDF. Multinationals, telecoms, banks and the larger conglomerates in Pakistan run applications through the same parsing software used elsewhere, so a decorative two-column template with your contact details inside an image is a real risk.
Before you send it
- Export a text-based PDF and confirm you can select the text with a cursor.
- Name the file Firstname-Lastname-Role.pdf.
- Match the job title in your profile to the title in the advertisement.
- Copy 8-12 exact skill terms from the advertisement into your skills line.
- Check the phone number is in international format (+92) for overseas applications.
- Keep one local version with photo and referees, one international version without.
What is different about applying to Gulf jobs from Pakistan?
Gulf employers expect nationality and visa status on the CV, accept two to three pages, and often want a passport-style photo. They also read "notice period" and "current and expected salary" as standard fields, which Pakistani private-sector employers usually ask for at interview stage instead.
The content stays the same; the personal details block and the length change. Keep a separate Gulf version rather than sending the local one, and state your visa or iqama status plainly if you already hold one, because it materially affects how quickly you can start.
