CV format for the UAE and the Gulf

A Gulf CV runs two to three pages, carries a formal photo, and states nationality, visa status and notice period in the personal details block. Employers in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar screen on availability and visa eligibility as much as on experience, so both belong near the top.
What does a UAE employer expect on a CV?
A UAE recruiter expects a two to three page CV with a photograph, a profile, experience with quantified results, education, certifications, languages and a personal details block that includes nationality and current visa status. The extra length is normal: Gulf hiring is document-heavy and a one-page US-style resume often reads as incomplete.
Recruiters in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Doha handle very high application volumes from across South Asia, the Levant, Africa, Europe and the Philippines. The details that let them shortlist quickly — nationality, visa, notice period, languages — are the ones candidates most often leave out.
| Field | Include | Why it is asked |
|---|---|---|
| Nationality | Yes | Affects visa route, quotas and salary banding |
| Visa status | Yes | Employment, spouse, visit or none changes the timeline |
| Notice period | Yes | Gulf roles are often urgent starts |
| Photograph | Yes | Standard practice; formal, plain background |
| Languages | Yes | Arabic and any additional language is a real differentiator |
| Driving licence | If relevant | Required for many field, sales and logistics roles |
| Date of birth | Optional | Commonly present, rarely decisive |
| Current salary | Optional on the CV | Often asked in the application form instead |
How should visa status be written?
State it in one plain line: "Visa status: UAE employment visa, transferable, 30 days notice" or "Visa status: none — requires sponsorship". Vagueness costs you interviews, because a recruiter with 400 applications will pass over the ones whose availability they cannot establish.
If you are already in the country on a spouse or dependent visa, say so — it usually shortens onboarding considerably and some employers filter specifically for it. If you are outside the region, give your notice period and the earliest date you could relocate.
How long should a Gulf CV be?
Two pages for most roles, three where a long project history genuinely needs the space — construction, oil and gas, engineering and healthcare are the usual cases. Anything beyond three pages should be trimmed rather than justified.
Project-based industries are the exception worth planning for. A civil or mechanical engineer is expected to list projects with client, value, duration and role, and that list is often the most-read part of the document.
What earns its space on page two and three
- A project table with client, contract value, duration and your role.
- Certifications and licences, including HSE, NEBOSH, PMP, DHA, HAAD, SCFHS and equivalency.
- Equipment, systems or software you have operated to a professional standard.
- Language proficiency stated by level, not as a single word.
- Awards, memberships and published work where relevant to the role.
Which certifications and licences matter in the Gulf?
Regulated fields require country-specific licensing, and stating it early avoids wasted rounds. Healthcare candidates should name DHA, MOH, HAAD/DOH or SCFHS status; engineers should note society membership and equivalency where relevant; safety roles should list NEBOSH or IOSH; finance should give ACCA, CPA, CFA or CMA progress with the exact level.
Say whether a licence is held, in progress or eligible. "DHA eligibility letter received" is a concrete, checkable statement, while "licensed professional" is not and invites a screening call you may not get.
Does a Gulf CV need to be ATS-friendly?
Yes. Large Gulf employers, government entities and the recruitment agencies that supply them all run parsing software, and many advertise through portals that index your CV for keyword search. A single-column, text-based PDF with standard headings survives that; a designed two-column layout with details in a graphic header often does not.
A Gulf-ready export checklist
- Single column, standard headings, no text boxes and no content in the page header.
- Photo placed inside the layout, not as a background image behind text.
- One date format throughout, with explicit end dates or Present.
- Phone number in international format, with a WhatsApp note if that is how you prefer contact.
- Nationality, visa status and notice period visible without scrolling past page one.
- Text-based PDF, named Firstname-Lastname-Role.pdf.
Should you send the same CV to every Gulf country?
Nearly, but adjust the licensing and language lines. Saudi Arabia weighs Arabic and Saudi-specific certification more heavily, the UAE is the most internationally staffed and most tolerant of English-only candidates, and Qatar and Kuwait sit between the two. The core document does not change.
What should change per application is the profile and the top three bullets, which should mirror the wording of the advertisement. That single edit does more than any layout choice.

Frequently asked questions
What should a UAE CV include that a US resume does not?
Nationality, current visa status, notice period, a formal photograph and language levels. Gulf recruiters screen on availability and visa eligibility as well as experience.
How long should a Gulf CV be?
Two pages for most roles, and up to three where a project history genuinely needs the space, which is common in construction, oil and gas, engineering and healthcare.
How do I write my visa status?
In one plain line, such as "UAE employment visa, transferable, 30 days notice" or "No visa — requires sponsorship". Vagueness costs interviews because recruiters cannot establish your start date.
Which certifications matter most in the Gulf?
Country licensing for regulated fields — DHA, MOH, DOH or SCFHS in healthcare, NEBOSH or IOSH in safety, PMP in projects, ACCA, CPA or CFA in finance — with the exact status stated.
Should I include my current and expected salary?
Leave it off the CV and answer it in the application form or the first call if asked. Naming a figure too early narrows your position without any information about the role.
Can I send the same CV to the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar?
Almost — keep the same document and adjust the licensing and language lines. Saudi Arabia weighs Arabic and local certification more heavily; the UAE is the most internationally staffed.
