A strong resume bullet follows one formula: a past-tense action verb, the work, a number, and the outcome it produced. Aim for 3-5 bullets per role and a number in at least 70% of them. The 12 rewrites below show the pattern applied across different jobs.
What is the formula for a resume bullet point?
Use action, metric, outcome: start with a past-tense verb, state what you did, attach a number, and finish with the result the employer cared about. One line is ideal and two lines is the maximum, because a three-line bullet stops being skimmable.
| Part | Question it answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Action verb | What did you do? | Rebuilt |
| Object | On what? | the checkout flow |
| Metric | How much or how many? | for 1.2M monthly visitors |
| Outcome | So what? | lifting conversion from 2.1% to 3.4% |
What do 12 before-and-after rewrites look like?
Each rewrite below keeps the same underlying work and adds only the number and the result — which is almost always the only thing missing from a weak bullet.
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Responsible for managing the team | Led a team of 9 and raised on-time delivery from 78% to 96% in 2 quarters |
| Worked on the company website | Rebuilt 14 landing pages, lifting organic sessions from 18,000 to 121,000 per month |
| Handled customer complaints | Resolved 60 inbound contacts daily at a 94% satisfaction score |
| Helped with month-end close | Owned 6 reconciliations and cut month-end close from 9 days to 4 |
| Assisted with recruitment | Screened 240 applications and hired 11 engineers with 100% 12-month retention |
| Managed social media | Grew Instagram from 300 to 4,100 followers in 8 months at zero paid spend |
| Taught mathematics | Taught 5 GCSE cohorts and raised grade 4+ attainment from 68% to 87% |
| Improved system performance | Cut API p95 latency by 62% by adding caching and query indexes |
| Looked after stock | Ran cycle counts across 4,200 SKUs, holding inventory accuracy at 99.4% |
| Did quality checks | Raised automated regression coverage from 34% to 89%, cutting release testing to 8 hours |
| Supported patients | Prepared 30 patients per day and improved intake documentation accuracy to 99% |
| Wrote reports for management | Built a weekly KPI pack used by 3 directors, replacing 6 hours of manual work with 90 minutes |
Where do you find numbers when you think you have none?
Count the volume, the frequency, the size or the change of anything you touched — every job has countable units, even when nobody reported them to you. Estimates are acceptable if you can explain the basis in an interview.
Seven countable sources
- Volume: tickets, patients, invoices, covers, students, SKUs, calls
- Money: budget owned, revenue influenced, cost removed, spend negotiated
- Time: hours saved per week, cycle time, turnaround, response time
- People: team size, people trained, stakeholders coordinated
- Quality: accuracy, error rate, satisfaction score, defect count
- Scale: users, locations, systems, markets, product lines
- Change: before-and-after pairs, which are the most persuasive form of all
Which action verbs should you use?
Use verbs that describe a decision or a change — led, rebuilt, negotiated, automated, reduced, launched — and avoid verbs that describe presence, such as assisted, participated or was involved in. Never repeat the same verb twice inside one role.
| Bullet type | Strong verbs | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Leadership | Led, directed, mentored, coached, restructured | Was in charge of |
| Building | Built, rebuilt, launched, implemented, automated | Worked on |
| Improvement | Reduced, increased, accelerated, streamlined | Helped improve |
| Analysis | Modelled, forecast, audited, diagnosed, quantified | Looked at |
| Support | Resolved, advised, coordinated, delivered | Assisted with |
How many bullets should each role have?
Give your most recent role 4-5 bullets, the previous one 3-4, and anything older 2-3, dropping to a single line for roles more than 10 years old. Recency should visibly control how much space a role gets.
How do you keep bullets honest?
Only claim numbers you can reconstruct in an interview: name the source, the period and your own contribution. Where you influenced rather than owned a result, say so — contributed to a 12% uplift is credible, while claiming the whole uplift alone rarely survives a follow-up question.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best format for a resume bullet point?
Action verb, what you did, a number, and the outcome — for example "Led a team of 9 and raised on-time delivery from 78% to 96%". One line is ideal, two is the maximum.
How many bullets should each job have?
Four to five for your most recent role, three to four for the previous one, two to three for older roles, and a single line for anything over 10 years old.
What if my work was never measured?
Count volume, frequency, money, people, quality or scale yourself. Any countable unit works, and a defensible estimate is better than no number.
Which words should I avoid starting a bullet with?
Avoid "Responsible for", "Assisted with", "Participated in" and "Was involved in" — they describe presence rather than a decision or a change.
Is it acceptable to estimate numbers?
Yes, if you can explain the basis in an interview. Where you contributed to a shared result, say "contributed to" rather than claiming the whole outcome.
