InstantCV makes a CV in the format your market expects — UK and Irish two-page, continental European with a photo, Gulf CV with nationality and visa details, or a long-form academic CV. It is free, needs no account, and exports a print-ready A4 PDF.
What is the difference between a CV and a resume?
In the UK, Ireland, most of Europe, Pakistan, India and the Gulf, "CV" is the everyday word for the one-to-two-page document a US employer calls a resume. In the US and Canada the same word means something different: an academic CV, a complete and unlimited record of publications, grants, teaching and appointments.
So the first decision is not which word to use but which convention your reader expects. Length, whether to include a photo, which personal details to list and the date format all change by country, and getting them wrong is the most common reason a strong CV looks out of place.
| Market | Length | Photo | Personal details |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom, Ireland | 2 pages | No | Name, city, email, phone |
| United States, Canada | 1-2 pages (resume) | No | No date of birth or marital status |
| Germany, Austria, Switzerland | 2 pages (Lebenslauf) | Usually yes | Often date of birth; signed and dated |
| France, Spain, Italy | 1-2 pages | Commonly yes | Nationality sometimes included |
| UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar | 2-3 pages | Yes | Nationality and visa status expected |
| Pakistan, India | 2 pages | Often yes | Father's name and CNIC still sometimes asked |
| Australia, New Zealand | 2-3 pages | No | Name, city, email, phone |
| Academic (any country) | No limit | No | Publications, funding, teaching |
How do you make a CV with InstantCV?
Fill in the seven-step form and watch the A4 preview build beside it. Every section is optional, so a Gulf CV can carry nationality and languages while a UK CV leaves personal details out, from the same form.
Making a CV in about fifteen minutes
- Choose the market you are applying in, and set the length target accordingly.
- Enter your name, target job title, city, email and phone.
- Write a 3-4 line personal profile naming the role and two proof points.
- Add each position with dates and 3-5 quantified bullets.
- Add education in full, including grades where your market expects them.
- Add languages, certifications and any publications or memberships.
- Pick a theme — with or without a photo panel — and export the PDF.
Which CV layout should you choose?
Pick the plainest layout your reader will accept. Large employers and public-sector recruiters run applications through parsing software, so a single-column layout with standard headings is the safest choice; smaller firms and referrals read the document directly, where a two-column or serif layout can help you stand out.
If your market expects a photo, use a theme with a dedicated photo panel rather than dropping an image on top of text, so the layout stays readable and the export stays parseable.
Layout by situation
- Large employer or online portal: Minimal, Modern or Corporate.
- Photo expected (Germany, Gulf, France): Two Column or Midnight.
- Senior or executive appointment: Executive or Crimson.
- Academic or research CV: Academic, which gives publications room.
- Long history on limited pages: Compact.
What sections does a CV need?
A CV needs a contact block, a personal profile, work experience in reverse chronological order, education, and skills. Everything else — languages, certifications, publications, volunteering, memberships, references — is included when it is relevant to the role or expected in your market.
Leave references off unless the posting asks for them. The line "references available on request" adds nothing and costs you space that a quantified achievement could use.
Is the CV maker really free?
Yes. Building, importing an old CV, the AI writing help, every theme and every export are free, with no account, no watermark on the PDF and no paid tier at the download button. There is no trial period to run out.
It is free because there is nothing to run: the preview and the PDF are generated in your browser, there is no user database, and nothing you type is uploaded — which is also why your personal details never leave your device.
Can you edit a CV after downloading it?
Yes. Your draft stays in your browser between sessions, so you can reopen the builder, change a section and export again. For a longer gap, export the JSON copy of your input and re-import it later, or import the PDF itself and let the builder read your details back into the form.
Tailoring beats reusing: for each serious application, change the profile's job title and the top three bullets to mirror the posting, then export a fresh file named for that employer.
Apply this in the builder
InstantCV is free, runs entirely in your browser and exports an A4 PDF with selectable text. Nothing is uploaded and no account is required.
