Why do free resume builders add a watermark?

A watermark is a sales tool. It lets a builder give away the useful part — the editor and the templates — while keeping the one thing you actually need, a sendable document, behind a payment. The watermark is usually applied at export time to a resume that is otherwise finished, which is why people discover it only after an hour of typing.

Branding appears in several forms, and only some of them are obvious. A diagonal grey word across the page is the honest version. A small logo or a "Made with..." line in the footer is easier to miss, and easier to send to an employer by accident.
